Ceremony/Reception Venue: The Whitney Restaurant Grade: B- (Initial Communication – D, Rehearsal and Day Of – A-)

The Whitney is absolutely gorgeous – inside and out. We chose to have our evening ceremony and reception at the Whitney outdoors in the garden. We had around 150 people – so it was perfect. Initial contact with the staff was horrendous and stressful – luckily they ended up replacing the original contact person with Kristine Rader. Kristine was VERY responsive and never missed our scheduled appointments. Everything we asked for happened and the Whitney staff was awesome. With the exception of some cold glares from a manager during the arrival for our rehearsal the day before and some confusion with staff telling our guests the wedding had been moved inside due to rain – everyone was accommodating. All of our guests commented on the friendliness of the staff, the great food and how awesome the bartender was. I was pleased with how quickly the staff converted the ceremony space into reception seating and the extra touches of lanterns in the back area – it made the garden look like something out of an evening fairytale. We had somewhat of a non-traditional wedding – but the Whitney let us do what we wanted and for that we are ETERNALLY grateful. Our wedding was perfect.

Hotel Accommodations/Guest Block: Motor City Casino Hotel Grade: B- (Rooms – A, Service – C-)

Motor City is a gorgeous hotel. Everything is updated and modern. All my guests raved about how nice the rooms were. The premier suite we stayed in was one of the nicest rooms I’ve ever stayed in. It was HUGE and had every thing for the perfect 2 day home away from home. Unfortunately – their service needs A LOT of work. We had a ton of problems while we were there. I had to check in twice the day before the wedding because I requested an early check-in so I arrived at 2 – I was told it would be ready in a half hour but when I arrived at 4:30 (1.5 hours after check-in time) – it STILL wasn’t ready and they lost my initial reservation – so they upgraded us to a premier suite – however – I was 30 minutes late for our rehearsal (and pissy) because of it. We had gift bags taken to all of our guests.. but our guests also received and invitation to another couple’s wedding and brunch tickets for their Sunday brunch. One of my out-of-town guests ended up at the other venue because of it. Needless to say – it caused A LOT of confusion. They were supposed to clean our room while we were at the wedding – they didn’t and when we returned I had to request towels at 3 am because my bridesmaids and I had used most of them getting ready earlier in the day. The day of check out they sent an incorrect bill with extra rooms on it.  So – there were just so many annoying little issues that made the stay pretty exhausting. I filled out a survey at their request and at least 3 managers have contacted me to remind me (as if I can’t recall) that we were upgraded. However, most of the craziness happened AFTER we were upgraded. tsk tsk – Note to managers: never ask guests for feedback and then make excuses for poor service. One bride to another – steer clear!

Photography: Carl Jones Photography and Willy Wangsa Photography: Grade: A+++

These guys did a great job. The teaser pics we’ve gotten so far have been awesome. We can’t wait to see the final results. We met with both gentleman and did a walk-through in the space a few weeks before. A lot of our questions were answered and it gave them both a chance to plan. The day-of picture sessions were seamless and we got all the pictures we wanted with a few extras. I know we’ll be pleased with the results.

Cake Topper: CrossWireDesign (Etsy Shop): Grade: A

Fast shipping, excellent communication, great price for quality work.

Cake and Cupcakes: The Cupcake Station - Ferndale, MI: Grade: A

I waited until 2 weeks before the wedding to order the cake and cupcakes. Partially because that’s when it was on my list and partially because I always knew we were going with cupcakes and that’s how long the cupcake station said they needed for the order. They did an EXCELLENT job. We decided to stop in one day and do our own personal tasting. We got one of each of their mini cupcakes and their color brochure and got to work checking off ones we liked and X’ing ones we didn’t like. It only cost us $26. It would have been cheaper on a Tuesday when minis are only $1 each. After we made our decision – I ordered over the phone and requested a custom round cake to go on top. Everyone commented on how pretty and delicious everything was. The price was VERY reasonable for feeding around 175 people.

Photobooth: Shutterbooth: Grade: A-

I highly recommend the photobooth experience. The guests love it, the couple loves it and you end up with really great memories at the end of the night. The photobooth host did a great job and we really enjoyed the scrapbook at the end of the night. In fact – we cracked it open when we got back to the hotel (while we waited for the fresh towels) and laughed at the pictures and messages people took and left. The only reason they get an A- is because communication was odd. Emails are often confusing and repetitive and you can sign up with one person, talk to another on the phone and get yet another person as the host. Communicating with 3 different people can get repetitive and annoying. A few times the phone contact called me about a topic we’d already discussed. That’s not cool when you’re a busy bride. Other than that – it was totally worth the investment – as it also served as our favor. We upgraded and got the bookmarks so people could protect their keepsake. Totally worth it!

Decor: Velvet Touch Events: A

Amber and her staff were exceptional. It was important that we have something beautiful, whimsical and eco-chic that didn’t break our piggy bank. She listened to my vision and created something that was perfect for our occasion and worked within our budget. She was accommodating and came to me for a face-to-face as well as had staff on hand to decorate after the ceremony space was switched over in to the reception space. The finished product was beautiful.

It was a blast. It went so fast. I’m still in LOVE with all of the decisions we made. I can’t wait to share more about our day. Side note – I haven’t bothered to add everything up but – we did keep close to budget. No more than 15K. So – no wedding debt for us. YAY!

5 days!

I can’t believe that our wedding is only 5 days away. It seems like just a few months ago – we had 18 months to go. Clearly that is impossible – but that’s really how it feels. I’m glad I had a while to enjoy being engaged – because it’s almost over now. I’ll be a married lady in like 5 minutes (actually – 5 days). It’s been a GREAT ride. I can’t wait to share everything with you guys. I think you’ll be surprised by some of the choices we made and some of the additions we chose. Fingers crossed that it doesn’t rain Saturday!

50 DAYS!!!

The official countdown has begun.. I’m announcing EACH day now. I won’t do that here – but know that out in the real world – someone hears my countdown EVERY day. My shower is in a week from Easter Sunday. I’m uberly excited. It’s going to be awesome. My Bridal team has done a fabulous job of planning EVERYTHING. We have our invitations back from the designer and printer. THEY ARE AWESOME. I started addressing them last night. They’ll go out Monday – just shy of 7 weeks out. Look at us! We are sticking to our deadlines – that makes me happy. My dress should be finished this weekend. I finished all of my DIY projects – Boutonnieres for the groom and groomsmen, corsages for the maid and matron of honor and my hair piece – all completed yesterday during my day with the groom’s mom.
I’m SO ready to get married… LIKE – REALLY READY!!!! The only things I have left on my list are – program order, deciding on a seating chart (to do or not to do), cupcakes and picking the songs for the ceremony.
I can’t WAIT!!!!

I made a bouquet

I decided that I didn’t want traditional flowers in my bouquet. Since we’re getting married in a garden – fresh cut flowers just seemed like overkill. I thought about a parasol, branches, candles, a fan, sand… all types of things. I came across a few pictures of bouquets with feathers mixed in with fabric, buttons and silk flowers. I really liked the feather addition to the bouquet. So I searched for plain feather bouquets. Of course you can find ANYTHING on etsy.com. The one I settled on was a whopping $275. This bouquet in particular used vintage lace and buttons.. it was GORGEOUS. But being the frugal bride that I am – I decided to find a cheaper one or try my hand at making one. I set out to Michaels and Joann’s to see what they had in terms of feathers. I was really surprised at the selection.. Michaels had PLENTY of brown and tan colored feathers (they also had some blues and some deep reds). I didn’t want flowers but I added a small but hardy bouquet to make the bottom fuller. I bought the flower tape, wire cutters, ribbon, crystals and lace from Michaels too. The woman in the flower department told me what to do.. she reassured me that I could totally make it.. and if I couldn’t – told me I could come back and she’d do it for me. :-)

I left Michaels and realized that I had forgotten the sparkly spray paint I wanted to use for the filler bouquet.. so I stopped at Joann’s. I also checked out their feathers.. They had JUST the ivory colored flowers I had been looking for – they also had a nice selection of packaged feathers on the shelves. I headed home $78 lighter with my supplies and got to work. First – I took the small bouquet apart (I really wish I had gotten pictures of all the pieces – sorry) – and spray painted them. Next I added the crystals to the middle of each one. Next I began wrapping sections with the flower tape. You do it section by section – it makes it more secure and allows for you to make adjustments. When I got it the way I wanted it – I glued some pieces together just so the feathers would hang perfectly and so that some of the longer stems in the back were covered. I wrapped the bottom in satin and then covered that with the lace. I glued the crystals on the bottom of the lace.

Unfortunately – this isn’t really a tutorial. Mrs12K already did a really nice bouquet tutorial HERE and there are TONS on the internet. I just hope that this inspires some of you to try your own. Oh – Disclaimer – I didn’t need ALL of the supplies I bought. In fact – before you cut anything – make sure it’s right and clip the excess ends right before you do the final wrapping with tape (before the ribbon and lace). All in All – I only spent $52. That’s only $2 more than I was planning to spend on a fresh flower bouquet and substantially less that the feather bouquet I really wanted at $275. There were some cheaper ones – I think the cheapest was around $60 (before shipping) but it was a lot shorter and not really full. If you aren’t into making one – check out etsy.com.

111 Days

Yesterday marked 111 days until our wedding. I spent part of the day thinking about all of the things that I’ve accomplished the last 14 months. Then I thought about all the things I have left to do. I will really be glad when all if this is over.
Initially, I had planned to DIY all of the decor..fortunately I found someone who would work with my budget and pull it all together. Small victory. More soon!

I can’t wait until the day is here! All this work will be totally worth it then.

So – my last post was originally drafted on January 19th – and for some reason it never got published.. so you’re getting two in one day.

I can say that the STDs were put in the mail yesterday and someone actually got theirs today! So – it’s officially – OFFICIALLY – OFFICIAL now! We are getting married!

Everything seems to be falling into place.

Here is what’s left on my list: Bridesmaids – jewelry, bouquet and hair flower, my hair flower, undies and bouquet, Groomsmen – dress shirts and boutonnieres, Hotel block and our room for the night.. I think we have everything else. YAY!!!!
