Professional Engagement Pics

We had the privilege of working with Carl Jones Photography on Memorial day to capture our official set of engagement photos.

We had a great time. Carl and his wife are so professional and organized. They knew we wanted a Detroit city theme – so they scouted out tons of sites around the city and had a list of great poses that we could copy and modify. We were so comfortable and got almost 300 totally usable shots of out the 3.5hour shoot. It was a pleasure to work with them and we can’t wait to see the final product.

For now – here is a sneak preview of our “unofficial” official save the date pic.

Polaroid Pogo Instant Camera

In thinking about our guestbook, you know me, I wanted something different. But of course that something different comes at a premium cost. Ideally, we’d do a photobooth like the ones at The Photobooth Company, but at $1000 for the least expensive package, that’s clearly not in the budget. So, I found an alternative.

Polaroid Pogo Instant Camera

The Polaroid Pogo camera. This is Polaroid’s new instant camera that’s so new, it’s barely even available in stores. This digital camera prints 2″x 3″ pictures with sticky backs. This would be perfect because guests could print their own pictures, stick them on a page in the guestbook and sign them. But alas, this little camera is $200.

I know $200 is a lot less than thte $1000 for the photobooth, but when you’re working with a 12k budget, thats $200 too much.

So what should I do? Any suggestions for an alternative?

Group Wedding Photos

We have an 18 person wedding party. So not quite as many as this party with 23, but I love how everyone just looks so comfortable and in their element. This is exactly how I’d love to have our group wedding photos taken. It’s right up my alley.

Lee Gainer on Engagement Ring Budgets

From what I can tell, Lee Gainer is a photographer/artist. One of his collections came across my reader today and it instantly intrigued me. He did a collection on what the WIC and the majority of our society think an engagement ring should be, categorized by profession.

The notion that the ring should be worth two months salary is common. For his two cents of social commentary on this bass ackwards idea, check out Lee’s collection.

As a disclaimer, let me just say that if a person is free to spend two months salary ring if they so choose. My problem is when it is positioned as a requirement. There is so much more I could say about this, but I’ll keep my soapbox neatly tucked in the corner for now.

As a teaser, here is what a mathematician would be able to afford on two month salary budget:

Engagement Ring Pictures

I, like everyone else followed suit after reading Anne Ruthmann’s post about taking shots of your ring. In the beginning I must admit I was guilty of the outstretched hand shot, which of course turned out quite bogus. After reading her post though, you can’t stop me. I have a little Canon Elph point and shoot and the pictures turned out pretty good in my opinion. I don’t know what I’ll do with them yet, but they’re too nice to not use.

A few notes that made it easier for me:

  • Find random objects to sit your ring on
  • I like food so I started with fruit
  • I used a piece of white paper as my backdrop
  • Don’t use the zoom feature but scoot in as close as you can
  • Play with lighting – I used a flashlight for some shadows

I had a difficult time focusing some of them where I wanted, but I think that’s something I can work on. Without further ado, a few of my favorite ring pictures:

Wedding Photographer Has Been Chosen! Elton Anderson Photography it is!

Wedding Photographer. Check!

I know we just got our venue, but I’ve been so ready to get to the other stuff, I already some of the other vendors waiting in the wings.

I’ve been looking at wedding photographers for a while now. I secretly love good photography and there couldn’t be a better excuse to pore over photographers websites. Of course, I primarily looked at Michigan wedding photographers so I could avoid the travel fee, but I definitely had my eye on a few out of towners.

Even after looking at probably hundreds of photographers, I still came back to the person I figured I would go with from the start. He’s both talented and economical and I’m very happy with our choice.

Our wedding will be photographed by Elton Anderson of (get this) Elton Anderson Photography. Elton and I have known each other for about 12 or 13 years now (whew!) and not only is a really good photographer, but he’s also a really nice guy.

Elton Anderson Blog – Weddings

Elton Anderson Photography

Elton is based in Florida, so I was super excited when he said he’d come hear to shoot our wedding. I’m not sure how long he’s been shooting he’s only started shooting professionally within the past few years, but I’ve watched his work go from good to really good  really quickly. What can I say – he’s a natural :-)

Since this is still a 12k Wedding (in theory, at least), cost was very important. Now – I won’t call Elton a cheap wedding photographer. That would imply that his work is sub-par and chintzy. That it is not. It is simply really good photography at an even better price. All of the other photographers I looked at seemed to start at around $2500. Elton has wedding photo packages starting at about half of that. Big difference.

No matter where you’re located, if you’re interested in using Elton as your wedding photographer, check him out and make sure you tell him you saw him on 12k Wedding.

Elton will be doing an engagement session with us in a few weeks. I’ll be sure let you all know how it goes!
