That’s too bad. You’ll find one that you like and that fits the budget. We are planning to do cupcakes too! And I have been in your shoes. My story started when my fiance and our mom’s went to well published bakery in Metro Detroit. After speaking with a very pleasant representative to make the tasting appointment, we were really excited. We were absolutely captivated by the wedding cake gallery they had set up upon entry into the bakery. However, we were also quite disgusted to hear the sound of a barking dog coming from the kitchen after we’d begun the tasting. Can you say yuck poo! I passively took a walk past the door only to discover the doggie bed in the middle of the floor and a poodle strolling around. I’m not a baker, but I’m almost certain that having a dog in the kitchen is a health code violation…Right?! So the lesson here is to take a look in the kitchen of the vendors who will provide your food. Better safe than sorry.

I know this place is expensive BUT Sweet Dreams Bakery in Warren is the best in design and in my opinion, they have a very professional taste. They do sporadic tastings, so all you do is show up and they will give you a tasting. Its on 13 mile and Ryan. http://www.sweetdreamsweb.com We caught our cake on sale, for half off per person. They are always having sales. However, if you want a custom design like your cupcake tower, there may be no way to avoid an outrageous price with this place. Although, I have heard cupcakes can be cheaper. You have nothing to lose. This place is open as I said, so you can just go up there and do a tasting.

What a horrible story! I should tell you though, when I sat down with the first baker I spoke to about my wedding cake, the very first thing she said to me was “Now, we absolutely make all of our cakes from scratch.” I asked her why she’d make a point of saying that– she’s a baker for crying out loud. Don’t bakers ALWAYS make their cakes from scratch? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Something like 90% of wedding cake designers make their cake from BOX MIX!!! And the only reason they charge so much is for their “expertise” in design!

I can’t imagine that you’d get a straight answer from a baker who used box mix, but it can’t hurt to ask them, I suppose. Good luck!
