DIY Bouquet Trial #2

You might remember my first bouquet trial. That one was mixed and was red, yellow and orange.

This time around, I did a trial with all white carnations. I’m leaning toward the idea of having an all white bouquet for myself and the mixed color bouquet for my girls. The carnations were pretty cheap. I got 2 dozen for $18 from a wholesale flower distributor. I took basically the same steps as with the first bouquet:

  • Strip all the leaves
  • Bunch the stems together and secure with floral tape
  • I didn’t use a cardboard wrapper around the stems this time, but I should have
  • Wrap the handle in ribbon and secure it with pins

The good thing about the carnations is that they’re very durable and very forgiving even at the mercy of my novice ability. I felt like they looked pretty good. My main concern is probably the fact that the stems are jointed so they snap pretty easily at the different joints in the stem. Other than that the were pretty easy to work with. If I do decide to do this, I might add one more dozen to make it a little fuller.

I’ll try and post some better pictures over the next few days, but I think you get the idea.

Hi! This is so useful. I’ll be making the bouquets too. Yours looks great. Also, I was just in Detroit a couple weeks ago and passed the Charles Wright Library. So pretty! Good luck with the caterer trials!

Turned out nice!

A really helpful site for design ideas is http://www.floraldesigninstitute.com. they have an excellent video library and do a really good job of teaching tips & tricks that aren’t crucial, but can save you a ton of time & hassle! Their site is a little difficult to navigate, but you can search youtube for “floral design institute” and come up with most of the videos including many specifically dealing with bridal bouquets. They also have some wonderful step by step tutorials in their archive: http://www.floraldesigninstitute.com/page004.11.01.01.000.htm

full disclosure: I’m not affiliated with that website in any way, but I am a part-time florist :)

Have you thought about changing up the wrap? Maybe you could wrap yours in your colors & the other lady’s in white.

The carnations are lovely. Are you concerned at all that the white flowers might not stand out against your dress in pictures?

I too am making bouquets, here is a really simple and helpful video I have used as a reference:

It seems easy enough to bunch the flowers together and go, and this only adds a few more minutes and gives a nicely rounded look without using too many more flowers.

@brittany, You make a good point. Maybe I should use a little greenery to help it stand out some. I’ve seen people use those big flimsy leaves folded as a frame all around the outside of the bouquet. That might be nice. Def something to think about.

@Vilija Thanks for the suggestion. Loved the video!

@Andi, that might be a cute idea for the handles. I haven’t even begun to think about what I’ll use that day. There’s so much to choose from, and with all the coupons and sales available, you can get pretty much anything you could want.

@chenda, @Esme, well thank you ladies :-)

@Rachel S – I’d heard about them before, but I’d completely forgot about them in the meantime. Thanks for posting the link to their stuff.

Very pretty missy.
