The DIA’s Money Woes and Event Policies

So it looks like the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is in a bit of a conundrum. According to the Detroit Free Press, their money seems to be dwindling.

I looked at the DIA as a possible location. Although the beautiful grand entry hall would have been beautiful, they wanted an arm, a leg, and our first born child for it. They did have another room that could accommodate our guests and would have been very nice, but because we’d have to use their single approved caterer, the costs ended up being about 30k total for venue and food. And that’s just for the reception, because they don’t allow any sort of ceremonies on their premises.

I wonder if they should re-evaluate their cost structure and policy on ceremonies. Maybe they’d have a few more interested parties, including me.

Hi 12k
I glanced at the DIA too but thier rental fees were outrageous!!! I quickly marked them off the list. I have pretty much given up on Detroit. To have the upgrades that we want to have, we are looking at about 20k no matter where we go. It is very frustrating to say the least. I’ll keep following your journey to see if you have better luck than I do.

I am so happy I came across your site? We are having our wedding at The Omni in Detroit, and the total cost (including full bar, flowers, photographer, etc) is looking like about 11k. The Omni has this patio and tented pavilion behind the hotel right on the Detroit river. There’s rental fee is only $2100 for both and their food + drink costs are below most catering services I looked into before making the final decision. Only thing is that you will have to have a late spring/summer wedding. The tent looks like a tent, so it will need dressing up. But even when I included all of the decor costs, I’m still coming out on top!

Hey Erica,
How many guests do you have?

125, but I am incorporating lounge furniture, cocktail tables, and a dance floor. If you cut the cocktail tables and lounge furniture, you could probably fit 200, maybe 250. The structure is 3000 sq ft.

your mother Paula has suggested that you check the masonic temple chapel.
