Looks good, doesn’t it?
For most of the of the weddings I’ve been to, the cake usually isn’t that good and is often an afterthought to the guests who are far more interested in dancing or leaving by the time the cake is served.
But what if there were cupcakes instead of cake?
- No cake-cutting fees
- A variety of flavors
- Portable
- No forks or plates
- Less expensive
First, I was against the idea I think mostly because it’s just traditional to have a cake and cut it together. But now that I’m seeing the benefits, they might beat tradition on this one.
I found a place in Birmingham, The Cupcake Station. They specialize in cupcakes and for the amount that we’d need, they charge $0.50 less per serving than the most affordable wedding cake rates I’ve seen.

Concerning the cake cutting fees, or lack thereof, you might want to check with your venue. Many venues charge a fee for offering up cupcakes even though the cake isn’t being cut. In August I planned a wedding and this was the case. The charge per cupcake was $1.50…for putting it on a plate. Unreal.

Make sure you taste the cupcakes at Cupcake Station. I was going to use them for my wedding but I thought their cupcakes were dry and not super tasty. But everyone has different tastes, so I recommend trying it first. I am still going with cupcakes but I am using a different vendor.

I love cupcakes at weddings! This is what we did for our wedding- it worked out great and was much less than a cake… and people were really excited about the cupcakes. We also had a small cake on top of our stand so that we could do the “cutting the cake” moment.

i echo jane — i ran the idea of cupcakes by my venue and the coordinator was still insisting that they needed to charge a cutting fee b/c it wasn’t provided by them. i was trying my hardest to talk them out of it but decided this wasn’t a battle worth fighting and switched to a cake buffet instead, so we still get our multiple flavors and a somewhat portable dessert — we’ll be doing one of the cakes with a small 2nd tier so we have something “wedding cake-y” to cut into.
as for your specific cupcake source, i went with my bridesmaids to cupcake station and found that i did enjoy some of their flavors, but not all. but i think for the size of order you want, they would bake them especially for the event, so you might not run into the issue of dryness, which it seems is a bigger problem for cupcakes on display (fresh vs. one day old?).

You know, we were going to do cupcakes in the first place (there are a billion wonderful cupcake shops in LA!) but you’ve given me even more great reason as to why cupcakes are more cost-effective, and less wasteful.

My fiancé and I are having a cupcake wedding as well. Not only b/c we avoid the cake cutting fee, but b/c neither of us want to do the actual cake-cutting tradition. Plus, I found these incredible laser-cut wrappers to use…and my vendor LOVES them. Win, win!!!
