DIY Essentials

This post by Mrs. Penguin over at Weddingbee is pretty timely. I’m pretty sure I’m going to diy most of the paper items (invitations, et. al.) and this list is good advice for a beginner like me. She lists the Top 5 items every diy-er should have for executing paper projects.

The point about the corner rounder is especially helpful. I’d just discovered this intriguing little tool and had planned on buying the she bought that only uses your thumb. Now, I know better, and will be splurging (just a few extra bucks) for the one that uses your whole hand.

I can’t say that I’m going to run out and purchase all of these items, but it is nice to have a point of reference.

Detroit Park Shelton Rooftop Wedding

I read Model D on a regular basis. It’s a really good stuff for positive stuff happening all across Detroit. They recently featured an article about a couple’s wedding that took place on the roof of the Park Shelton. I knew the Park Shelton was recently renovated and being occupied, but I had no idea the rooftop was accessible and usable.

The premise for the wedding was the couple bringing their guests from around the country to their destination wedding in Detroit, the place they now call home. The guests were all pleasantly surprised to find that Detroit isn’t exactly the wasteland they thought it would be. They was plenty to do and see and the experience was better than they expected.

The pictures probably don’t even do it justice. The view makes the city look beautiful. And the couple, Brad and Dana, look like they had a great time.

Congratulations to them!

Cupcakes Instead of Cake

Looks good, doesn’t it?

For most of the of the weddings I’ve been to, the cake usually isn’t that good and is often an afterthought to the guests who are far more interested in dancing or leaving by the time the cake is served.

But what if there were cupcakes instead of cake?

  • No cake-cutting fees
  • A variety of flavors
  • Portable
  • No forks or plates
  • Less expensive

First, I was against the idea I think mostly because it’s just traditional to have a cake and cut it together. But now that I’m seeing the benefits, they might beat tradition on this one.

I found a place in Birmingham, The Cupcake Station. They specialize in cupcakes and for the amount that we’d need, they charge $0.50 less per serving than the most affordable wedding cake rates I’ve seen.

Guestbook Pages

I don’t really want a standard issue white guestbook with single lines for everyone to cram in theirnamesandaddresses. Not really my thing. What I would like is something more memorable and meaningful for both our guests and us. I hadn’t put much thought into it yet, but I came across this post by Mrs. Eggplant at Weddingbee. I love the idea and it looks like another fairly easy diy project.

Basically, she designed the guestbook page herself and printed it on cardstock paper. There are questions for the guests to answer and keep them occupied. I can easily see this coming in handy as a conversation-starter.

The guests take a polaroid of themselves with cameras provided by the bride and groom and peel and stick it to the page. Afterward, all the pages can be arranged in a keepsake-style book.

Escort Card Tents

I like these escort cards seen over at The Bride’s Cafe. They seem like they’d pretty inexpensive but still kinda stylish. And I think they’d be easy to diy. I imagine it would go something like this.

  1. Create a square template, with maybe 6 per page
  2. Print each page with names on the cards
  3. Flip the same paper around in the printer and print the table numbers on the reverse side
  4. Cut the squares out with a paper cutter
  5. Fold the squares on the diagonal

You could a nice cardstock and black ink with a nice font. Very easy diy.

Whaddya think?

Beer Glasses — I Mean Vases

UPDATE:

I actually bought the TEST glasses, not the MJOD beer glasses, which look very similar and are actually a dollar cheaper.

————————————————————————

What do you guys think of these beer glasses from IKEA? They’re $6.99 for a 6-pack. I actually already have a set of these that we actually have never used. Turns out just because they look cool in the store and they’re a good price doesn’t mean anyone in the house will actually drink beer from a glass. Go figure.

Looking at them again, I think something like this might work as vases for our tables. We could use them with a few long stemmed flowers or  some shorter stemmed flowers floating in water in the glasses. Or maybe something else – who knows.

Not a bad idea right?

Westcheser, NY Wedding on a Budget

I just found this CNN story about a Westchester,NY bride on a budget.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/personal/06/20/wedding.budget/index.html

Some of the tips are things you typically hear, like having the wedding in the afternoon rather than the evening.

But there were a few good tips, like considering renting a cake instead of buying one. I’d never heard of this before, but it doesn’t sound like a horrible idea.

Inexpensive Vegas Reception

So apparently, my major malfunction is easily overcome in Las Vegas.

Today, Miss Dumpling at WeddingBee posted about her reception venue, which is about 20 minutes from the strip. That aside, it covers all the main issues I’m having. She has a guest list of about 200-250 people and they can bring their own caterer and liquor. And from what I understand, it won’t cost much more than 10k.

Surely, when you compare Vegas to Detroit and the costs of living/economy in said cities, I should be able to enjoy the same luxuries as Miss Dumpling for the same or less money.

Anyway. Her venue looks beautiful. Congrats to her and keep your fingers crossed for me.
