Little Black (Bridesmaid) Dresses?

So, while I’m on the hunt for the most perfect ivory dress of all time, I realize I might need to think a little more like Meg at A Practical Wedding. While ivory bridesmaid dresses seemed like a really good idea after I saw them in someone else’s wedding, I lost sight of reality.

Here are the issues:

  • Ivory is difficult to find after Labor Day
  • I don’t know what color shoes I’d want my girls to wear
  • Whatever shade of ivory I end up finding might end up looking bogus next to the ivory of my dress
  • Dressmakers don’t seem to care to make many ivory dresses

Now, here’s why I’m thinking of having my girls wear black dresses:

  • Black dresses are in abundance
  • Easier for them to re-wear the dress
  • Everyone can wear their own black shoes
  • Black is generally flattering on everyone
  • Black is classic

If really necessary, maybe we can add an different color tie/belt/sash. But I think black will be the way to go.

I think my favorite dress is the one on the left in the bottom row. The best part though- all of the dresses in my sample block are less than $180, and one of them is only $95!

Can you guess which one?

I think you’re making a wise decision to switch to black dresses. Everyone will be happy to wear a black dress because they are most flattering. Plus, YOU will stand out so much more. And about the ivory…let me tell you…Only my dress was ivory for our wedding, and finding all of the right accessories that were the right color ivory for me was hard enough. For some reason, there seems to be like 4 different color versions of “ivory”. I could only imagine trying to find the same ivory color for all the bridesmaids!

I adore the black dress idea. Lady, you are too smart for me! My favorite one (not that it matters :) ) is the one in the top row on the left. Cap sleeves, satin and fitted is too fly! And if I had to guess the $95 dress, it would be the one on the bottom right.

Black is a good idea…just watch out for the fabric choice. Something that has a bit of a shine/satin-y look to it would look best and more “rich”.

For some reason, I keep picturing the commercial with the little black dress and deoderant stains tho..lol. Maybe that’s just me…

Have you decided the colors in your wedding then? I’m imagining an accent of color on the bridesmaids (perhaps a sash or maybe even the flowers they could hold). Colors that pop in mind are rich colors like red, royal blue, purple…actually most colors will pop against the black. And whatever color (if any) you use, perhaps the groomsmen can have that color tie, with black vest. I don’t even know if you have considered them yet…but I’m just trying to find ways to throw in (an)other color(s).

YAY!!! Black dressess..my fave are the first and second ones in the top row! Shall i start another search :-)

I always thought black was a color of mourning? That said, I applaud your courageous attempt to bite your thumb and proper-schmomper wedding etiquette! I like the 2 middle in the top row and LOVE the one on the left in the bottom row!

You know I love black! I like them and that they are all under $180, however I do have a favorite. It’s the one
right next to the one on the top left side. I like that it’s not too plain, still fitted to show off the womanhood and classy/dressy enough for the BM’s to be standing next to you in your gown without stealing the shine.

I’m actually going to do the same thing! My wedding is in November and most people think fall, but my colors are black, white, and teal. Cute lil black dresses are definitely classy, elegant and of course everyone knows, every girl needs one :) Good luck in planning your wedding!
